How To Share Files Between Two Computers

Sharing a file now is made easier via the following steps:

1. Connect the computers by:

Method A: Using a Crossover Cable to connect both computers

Resources needed:

Network cards installed in both computers

    1 Crossover Ethernet cable

If network cards are already installed in each computer, connect the two computers by attaching one end of the crossover Ethernet cable from one computer and the other end to the second computer.

Method B: Using a Hub to connect both computers

Resources needed:

Network cards installed in all computers

2 or more normal Ethernet cables

If network cards are already installed in all computers, connect both computers to the hub by attaching one end of the Ethernet cable from the network card to the hub.

Method C: Using a Router to connect both computers

Resources needed:

Network cards installed in all computers

2 or more normal Ethernet cables

DSL modem provided by your ISP and a working high speed service

A router, can either be wireless or wired that is bridged to the cable modem.

If network cards are already installed in all computers, connect both computers to the router by attaching one end of the Ethernet cable from the network card to the router. Once done with attaching the Ethernet cables, connect to your high-speed Internet service using your router's GUI, usually by entering 192.168.1.1 on the address bar of your Internet browser.

How To Take Apart a Gateway Laptop

The first step in fixing any internal problem in your Gateway laptop is disassembling the base unit and motherboard completely. You will need to do this as well if you want to clean its fans, replace the adaptor for wireless network connections, and upgrade its memory. Having these processes done by a certified technician can cost you a lot of money. However, if you have a little hardware knowledge, a few basic tools, and a few hours to spare, you can easily take apart your Gateway laptop on your own. Just follow these steps.

Prep the laptop before taking it apart. If your laptop is switched on, shut it down and wait for it to cool down before unplugging the adaptor. Turn the unit over and remove the battery pack. Lay the laptop down on a flat and dry surface. Position the unit so that the hard drive is at the corner, bottom left side and the slot for the battery is at the far side. Prepare several marked dry containers for your screws.

Detach the covers of the hard drive and the memory board. Locate the two screws securing the cover to the rest of the unit. They should be found on the cover’s left side. Use an appropriate screwdriver to remove these and detach the cover completely by lifting it off the laptop’s base. Now that it is off, you should be able to see the cover of your laptop’s memory board. There should be eight screws securing it. If you are having a hard time finding this, just look for the product sticker marked Gateway and look at the area above it. Again, use the correct screwdriver to get these securing pins loose.

Disconnect the adapter for the wireless network connection and the pair of memory modules in your Gateway laptop. Locate the cover right above your laptop’s hard drive. Take off the cover of the Wi-Fi card by undoing the screw holding the adapter in place. You should see two cables attaching the adapter to the wireless card. Simply disconnect these cables then snap the wireless card out of its holder. You will find the memory modules in the middle of your motherboard. With your fingers, pull them out and place them in a safe area on your table.
Remove the heat sink and CD or DVD drive. Find the screws holding your CD or DVD drive to your unit. There should be about four of these screws. Unscrew them carefully and gently push the drive out of the slot. Find the unit’s cooling fan and locate the heat sink. Unscrew all four of the tacks securing the assembly and gently lift the heat sink and fan out. You will see a cable connecting the fan to the laptop, firmly unplug this cable.
Remove the remaining covers. You will find eighteen screws around the base of your Gateway laptop. Look between the product stickers and at the center of the board. Remove the screws and place them inside your marked container. Stand the laptop on one of its edges with its back facing you. You will find two more screws securing the hinges. Remove these screws then pry hinge cover up. Gently lift this cover off.
Detach the laptop’s keyboard and LCD screen. Lift your laptop’s keyboard and gently release the data cable connecting it to the motherboard. Unplug the cables for the Wi-Fi antenna and video. Unscrew the bolts on either side of the LCD screen. You should now be able to lift this off the base unit.

Finally, you can disconnect the system board. Just flip over the base unit and remove the five screws securing the system board. Unhook the data cable attaching it to the base.

Now that you have completely taken apart all the components of the Gateway laptop, you will be able to perform any of the upgrades and repairs that you need to do. Just remember that if your unit is still under warranty, do not open your laptop or else the warranty will be voided.

How To Take the Keys Off a Laptop

Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you really need to take the keys off of your laptop? You may be cleaning the keyboard section, have dropped a small earring between the crevices, or simply want to brush away the croissant crumbs over the keys. Whatever your reason is, there is an easy way of removing the keys of your laptop without damaging the pieces.

Identify which keys need to be pulled out or removed. If you are cleaning your entire keyboard, then you will definitely need to remove all of the keys. It is best to draw a mock keyboard on a piece of paper and place the pulled out keys on it so that you can map them out properly when you need to put them back. You definitely do not want to misplace the keys when you take them out. Another way to make sure you put them back in the right place is to do the cleaning of your board in phases. For example, you will remove all keys that are south of the ASDF section first. When you are done, put the keys back in place and start removing those keys to the north of the ASDF section.

Prepare to remove the keys. Once you have identified the specific keys to take out, press down the key that is on the immediate left (or right) of the first key you will be removing. For example, if you need to remove the E key, press the R or the W key down. This would make the sides of the E key exposed where you can insert a pin or a ballpoint pen cap through.
Pry the key off. Use a dull tool, such as the tip of a ballpoint pen cap, a nail file, or a popsicle stick, as leverage to lift the key from the keyboard. In some laptops, doing this may cause the key to fly off so be prepared for that situation.
Take note that in newer laptop models, this technique will not work since the laptop’s casing covers the entire keyboard – there is no space for you to insert your prying tool. If that is the case, then you will have no choice but to bring the laptop to a service center.
Take extra care. Make sure the tool that you will use to pry off the keys is dull since any sharp object can damage the underlying parts of the laptop. Keep all of the removed keys in one container so that you will not lose them. To reattach the key, place it over its designated spot and gently but firmly press down on the key to snap it in place.

Remember to do this task in a well-lit room so that you can see if there are underlying wires or chips that you might hit as you remove each key. This is also a good time to check the condition of each key – there may be some pieces that need to be replaced.

How To Remove Gold from Computer Parts

Extracting gold from computer parts seems to be a trend. Old computers still have some value. It may appear as trash, but others see it as a gold mine. It can be profitable and at the same time, risky for your heath.

Prepare your materials and protective gear. You will need at least 3 glass beakers, 1 glass rod, nitric acid, glass cover, filter, steel tweezers, distilled water and sodium bicarbonate. Wear a mask, a lab coat, protective eye wear and gloves that are meant to protect you from acids and chemicals. Of course, have your computer parts ready with you.
Look for a safe location to do the procedure. A chemical lab is the best place to do this since the equipment you need may be readily available. The table in most labs is made of ceramic tiles, which is safe. Water sinks and shower heads are also within the area should you have an accident and need to immediately wash off chemicals from your skin or eyes.
Place the computer parts in the glass beaker and pour in the chemical solution. Once you extract the computer parts, clean it with any dry wash cloth to remove all the dust. You may also use a brush to reach through the pines and small parts. The beaker should be at least 3 inches taller than the computer part when placed inside. Slowly pour in the nitric acid until the computer part is completely submerged. Use the glass rod to guide the nitric acid into the glass beaker to avoid any spatters.

Cover the glass beaker and observe it for a few days. Immediately cover the glass beaker with a glass cover. Make sure it is secure and away from children’s reach. Label the beaker properly to make sure no one else touches it and place it where it cannot be easily toppled over. You may add more nitric acid in the next few days to speed up the process. The liquid should turn slightly blue.
Pour the liquid into another glass beaker over a filter. The metal parts will dissolve with the acid and eventually all that should remain are the tiny gold parts. In another glass beaker, place the filter on top and pour in the liquid from the first beaker. The filter should catch the gold. Use your steel tweezers to transfer the gold into the third glass beaker.
Rinse the remaining gold in distilled water with sodium bicarbonate. The third glass beaker should have distilled water with the sodium bicarbonate mixed into it. Keep adding sodium bicarbonate into the distilled water until it can no longer be dissolved. When this is ready, you can start putting in the gold parts to rinse it. This will remove all the remaining acids. Let it stay in the mixture for at least 30 minutes and discard the liquid mixture in the proper place. Place the gold on a white cloth and let it dry.

Now that you have the gold, the next you need is to find a buyer or to mold it any way you want. If you have enough computer parts that have gold, this should be a worthwhile endeavor. However, know that it can be risky and may affect your health. Too much exposure to chemicals can increase your toxicity and lead level in your body.

How To Reset an eMachine Computer

The eMachine computer is a budget machine which is not really designed for heavy duty use such as gaming but gives an acceptable performance considering its low cost. It comes with regular features that you can expect from an inexpensive computer such as certain processors, USB ports, a modem, jacks for front audio and microphone purposes, a CD drive, and others. It can also have Windows XP or Vista operating systems already installed on it. If you currently own an eMachine computer, there will always be a chance that you may need to reset it when certain circumstances necessitate you to do so. PCs are always at a risk of encountering viruses or other types of malware and resetting may be one good way of restoring the system should it encounter these situations. The process of resetting an eMachine, while not difficult, still calls for a bit of knowledge on how to go about doing it. The following steps are listed below to help you do this.

Turn off your computer. If your computer can be shut down as you normally do, proceed to shut it down. However, if you are having a problem and the computer does not seem to respond to the regular shut-down process, unplug it from the electrical outlet.

Plug the computer back in. After you have shut off your computer, you will need to start it again. Plug it back in and proceed to press on the button for power. When “Press F11 to start recovery” appears on your computer screen, locate the F11 button and press on it a few times so that it is able to register. When the screen for recovery refuses to appear, you will need to turn off your computer again and re-start until the recovery screen is viewed and you can begin the process.
Pick out the appropriate selection. There are a couple of recovery options that you will be shown to select from on your recovery screen. Select the Full System Restore option, which allows you to shift your hard disk’s contents into C:\My Backup. This will keep important files created, safe from being deleted. You may however need to reinstall computer applications.
Complete the Full System Restore process. The process of fully restoring the system takes a bit of time, according to how old or how efficient your eMachine may be. Simply wait for it to work on itself, and once that is accomplished, your computer will restart on its own. Since it will be restarting on safety mode, this may take a little time as well. After this is done, you will now start the process of reinstalling your computer applications. Although you have saved important computer-created files, the applications used for them will need reinstalling.

The longer you make use of your eMachine, the more files you will be accumulating, which would greatly affect its performance speed. Viruses can cause the same symptom as well. Aside from resetting it, you may want to begin removing programs from the computer, which you no longer need so that you will be able to restore it to its original state.

How To Reset a Computer's Hard Drive

Computers continue to slow down as they get older. Soon, the hard drive will be clogged enough to drive you mad. Deleting files, doing a disk clean up, defragmenting the drive, and running an effective anti-virus application are not anymore enough to at least keep it functional. Your last resort is to reset the hard drive. Doing so is as simple as clicking the appropriate command and having enough patience. However, doing it the wrong way will cause deleting of all the files in the hard drive. Better follow the steps below on how to properly reset a computer’s hard drive:

Back-up hard drive files. Copy and then paste all the files from the hard drive. Do not use the back-up application or removing viruses will be impossible without damaging the safe files. Use any storage device for backing up the files as long as it is big enough for all the files. Don’t worry if there are viruses. Deal with them later.
Check the needed drivers. All of them must be available before resetting the hard drive. Check the drive’s configuration and then compile its needed drivers. If some drivers are missing, you can download copies from the Net.

Decide on the formatting and set the boot device. Format these partitions individually and manually. Do not format the C drive because this is usually where the important applications needed to normally run the machine are saved. There is the quick format option, which as the name suggests will quickly format the drive. Do not use this, though, because this will erase even the important applications. Instead, restart the computer. Press the Del key when the computer tells it is needed to renter the BIOS. Set the CD/DVD drive as the primary boot device.
Insert the installation CD. Do not be tempted to change other settings especially if you don’t know the effect of each change. Just do what you need to do. Insert the Windows installation disk and choose “Save and Exit.” The computer will restart and then it will load the installation CD. Press any key if the computer asks you to do it so the process can be started.
Format. Wait until the computer asks you to choose the partition and where to install the Windows. You may choose C and then choose “format using NTFS” if using Windows XP. Choose C and then click the advanced options if using Windows Vista and more advanced operating systems. Choose the disk’s partition to be formatted. This step also allows you to repartition the hard drive.
Finish the installation process. Enter the username and password as well as the serial key if asked by the computer. Install also all the applications and drivers that are needed to normally run the computer.
Eliminate malwares. Install an effective anti-virus application and then connect the device where you have copied the files. Scan this device for any malware threats and then copy the files to the hard drive.

You have finally reset the computer’s hard drive. Do as you please with this faster machine. You might need to reset the hard drive again after intensive use of the computer. For now, stick to the important maintenance techniques to keep the hard drive and the overall computer system to their best performance.

How To Stop the Conficker Computer Virus

Since 2003, the Conficker Computer virus has become the most massive computer worm infection. It is a computer application installed on computer hard drives through web pages programmed with malicious instructions. It can also pose as Spyware Protect 2009 in order to steal someone’s credit card details and identity. So far, it has caused damage to millions of hard drives and computers worldwide. Its damage becomes worse as it also installs another virus, the Waledac. The Conficker Computer virus has definitely made people cautious and vigilant. However, if you feel like you have not done enough to avoid it, you must check your computer as soon as possible and have the virus removed. You will be guided by the instructions below.

Research. Of course, you must find out more about this virus in order to protect your system from it. You will also want to make sure that this is the virus that has gone into your computer. Remember, there are other kinds of worms and viruses out there infecting computers.
Check the Microsoft Support page. You may check out this particular link for more information about the virus. In this website, you are told that if you see whatever is on the page, chances are, you do not have the virus. However, this is not enough. Proceed to the next set of instructions to make sure that your computer is not infected.

Run your anti-virus software. You have to check if your anti-virus software is updated. If you are constantly checking for updates and installing them, your software must probably be up to date. Otherwise, you may check SpySweeper and Norton Antivirus in order to get available packages. From their websites, you can download the particular programs that are effective in stopping the Conficker virus.
Run tests. Once you have downloaded the software, you can begin running tests. Once you have run the sweep, the cookies, viruses, and bugs will be removed from your computer.
Use Conficker Removal Tool. You can use this by navigating to the CNET
website. You will see the tool on their page. Download it and take note
where it will be saved. Launch it once it finishes downloading. Accept
the terms and start scanning. When done, follow the instructions in
removing the worm. When the scan is complete, you may click on “Finish”
    to finalize the process.

Once you have finished the procedures, you may visit the Microsoft website again to do the screen test. If you are still not confident with what you have done, you can always have your computer checked by IT technicians. Ask for their help and show them your computer. Even without the threat of any virus, make sure that you always have your computer checked out once in a while because you never know when viruses sneak in. Keeping your anti-virus software up to date is very important if you want to maintain your computer’s high performance. It is better to allot time in installing and updating anti-virus software rather than having to remove viruses later. Much more damage will be done to your hard drive once viruses do get in.

How To Create a Prank Flash Animation

Have you been a victim of prank flash animation? That is when you opened your email, you found a link in your inbox and when you clicked the link, you got the surprise of your life when some scary figures flashed on the screen? Well, if you are wondering how you can also shock a friend using prank flash animation, here are tips you can use for this trick:

Install Macromedia or Adobe Flash. If these are not readily available in your system install them using appropriate discs or drivers.
Use ActionScript. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Flash and computer animation is also useful.
Choose a prank. You may sketch the setup on a drawing pad. Indicate each sequence or series of acts that you want to include. Start from the intro to the final scene. The usual arrangement consists of an innocent image in the beginning with nice music background. Then suddenly towards the middle, something eerie happens until the whole series ends with a gruesome picture such as a screaming vampire or a groaning headless creature.
Prepare the materials. You may use sketches or drawings, photos or downloaded images from television shows or movies. Look for suitable music from your collection if you have one.
Crop the images. You can make a collage if you want. All these applications can be done with a photo shop program.
Make a story board. Like how they do it when making commercials – make a sequence of scenes from the start to end of the animation set up. Assign a frame for each step or scene.

Construct the flash animation. Base the animation on the story board you have produced. Plan the time duration of your program. You can run the preliminaries in 20 seconds to establish the audience and keep them glued to the screen. After this period, make a sudden release of a frightening picture, accompanied by a startling music or sound effects. Make sure both the images and the music synchronize well. Delayed sounds will strip the whole thing of its prank value.
Make the prank flash interactive. You can do this by inserting instructions below the screen such as: “scroll to see more” or “right click to see image” and so on. Each time the viewer moves the mouse, (according to your instruction), he is led closer to the shocking finale of the whole sequence.
Include stories. Hold the viewer’s attention by injecting some intriguing facts in the series. For instance, you can use favorite fairy tales like Cinderella as reference. A rolling statement such as: “Cinderella, I adore you, let me put my arms around you” - will surely seize the viewer’s interest to the very end especially when a nice music is playing from the background.
Integrate ActionScript program. Test-run your production. Next, save your file in your computer and attach it to emails by importing. You can also publish the prank flash animation you created in your blog or website.

There are a number of prank flash animations on the Internet, particularly on YouTube. Be careful not to duplicate any of these already published creations so you will not be made liable for infringement of rights.

How To Find High Availability Database Solutions

High availability is a protocol that is executed to make sure that operations are continuous for a certain period of time. This makes different systems available to provide services for institutions, businesses and other entities. High availability ensures that there is no downtime when there are activities that need to be done on the system. There are various high availability database solutions available.

The high availability protocol is useful for both planned and unplanned downtime. Planned downtime is when the system goes offline because of maintenance or improvements that are done. Unplanned downtime happens when there are sudden power outages. The high availability database solutions are very useful during these situations.

Here are some of the high availability database solutions that are implemented:

Failover Clustering. Failover clustering provides support for SQL server. Failover clustering is the terms used for a system that has multiple nodes and servers. It also has two or more shared disks. The SQL failover cluster is detected on the network as only one computer. Failover Clustering is not a solution for disk failure. This solution can be used in order to lessen the downtime of the system and provide longer times when the server is available.

Database Mirroring. Database mirroring is the solution used to be able to support failovers of the system and also to increase the database availability for the entire network. A snapshot of the mirror database can be taken so that users can view the database. They are not allowed to alter the snapshot of the mirror database as it is a read only file.

Log Shipping. Log shipping is a solution for the database level. You can use this method to uphold a standby database. The standby database can also be referred to as the secondary database. This is the database that is created when the primary database is restored without a backup. Log shipping is used to support a lot of standby databases all at the same time.
Replication. Replication is the solution used to allocate data to secondary servers. There are three types of replication methods that are used. The first one is the snapshot, the second one is the transactional, and the third one is known as merge. This method is typically used for high availability.
Solutions. These are the solutions provided for planned and unplanned downtime. These solutions are able to do the activities that are done by the primary server. By using these solutions, people will still be able to access the database for a limited time before the system goes into total downtime.

These are some of the solutions for high availability database. The percentage of the downtime annually can be determined by the percentage of availability. This is for systems that are expected to operate without stopping. The higher the availability, the less downtime that the server experiences. If you want to read more information about high availability database solutions, you can visit the website microsoftelearning.com and search for the different courses that will help you better understand the different high availability database solutions.

How To Uninstall Adobe Indesign CS2

Adobe InDesign CS2 is an amazing computer application that deals with laying out pages that you would like to format to make your text look like a real newspaper, magazine, book, or what have you. Adobe InDesign CS2, as the name implies, is the second edition of the software and brings about a slew of upgrades and new features, allowing for easier use and more efficient layouts.

Since Adobe InDesign CS2 is packed with a lot of features, it logically follows that a lot of additional components were added as part of its installation process. While all these components are well and good if the software is used a lot, they also heavily burden a computer since it takes quite a bit of memory to run it, causing your computer to slow down and run inefficiently. If Adobe InDesign CS2 is rarely used, it is highly recommended to uninstall it to free up more computer resources that can speed up the computer’s processing power.
  • Adobe InDesign CS2 uninstallation tool. Uninstalling Adobe InDesign CS2 does not require a computer technician. Nor does it require you to bring your computer to a computer shop. This process can be simple if you are properly guided. And, it can be even simpler if you know the right tools to use.
The easiest way to remove Adobe InDesign CS2 is by using its very own uninstallation tool. You can find this executable file in the program’s installation folder. It may even be available through the Start menu, then All Programs, and under the Adobe InDesign folder. The file should be labeled Adobe InDesign. Click on it and the uninstallation process should initiate. Follow the prompts and wait for it to complete the uninstallation. In the end, you will be asked to reboot your computer to complete its removal.

Make Your Own Soy Candles: A Tutorial

Making soy wax container candles is easy and fun!

Making candles from soy wax is easy and lots of fun. I like to have scented candles in my home, and I discovered that by making my own candles, I can choose exactly the color and scent that I like. I also sell the candles that I make.

All images by the author unless otherwise noted.

What is Soy Wax?

soybeans growing in a fieldSoy wax is very different from conventional paraffin wax, which is made from petroleum. Soy wax is a vegetable wax that comes from soybeans. The oil is extracted from the soybeans and hydrogenated so that it is solid at room temperature. Unlike petroleum, soybeans are an ecologically sustainable renewable resource. After the oil is removed from the soybeans, the remaining part of the beans can be used for animal feed.

Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, so it is most often used to make container candles and tea lights. It can be combined with other types of waxes such as beeswax in order to make free standing pillar candles.

When you buy soy wax for candle making, it comes in easy to use wax flakes.

About Filipino Food Lovers

5 things I realized about Filipino Cuisine

Our Filipino merienda (snack) feast at Delmon Restaurant in Karama, Dubai UAE
I am Filipino and I eat Filipino cuisine often, but I don’t claim to be an expert in it. I know what I eat from my own learnings based on what was imparted to me by my food loving parents and my own food experiences from travels around the home country. Tonight, I even learned more about my home cuisine as I explained it to a good foodie friend, who was patient enough to hear more about my Filipino food stories and observations for the 2nd time around.
Here are some of the learnings I’ve realized over the our 2nd Filipino dinner together:
  • Filipino cuisine has a strong Spanish and Chinese influence.
For those of you who don’t know Philippine history (I am guessing all you non-Filipinos out there), the Philippines was a colony of Spain for 333 years. So with a little more than 3 centuries of Spanish colonial rule, you can guess how much of our culture is influenced by the Spanish: our religion (predominantly Roman Catholic), our language, our architecture and, of course, the food. Spanish dishes like Paella and callos have already made it’s way to the Filipinos’ everyday dining table.
Another strong influence to Filipino cuisine is our ginormous Asian super power neighbor, China. Chinese traders made their way to Philippine shores during the galleon trade days and chose to settle down in our tropical paradise, making headway into our melting pot of a culture. So you will find a lot of pancit (noodles) and dimsum (like siomai / siew mai and pork buns / siopao) in Filipino restaurants. A bit of trivia, my family actually has Chinese ancestry, which explains my chinky eyes :-)
  • We do love our vinegar.
Quite a number of our dishes like adobo, kinilaw (Filipino ceviche…See? Spanish influence!), sisig (Apparently, according to Wikipedia, it is a Kapampangan word which means “to snack on something sour”), dinuguan (pork blood stew) have a heavy hand of vinegar. Plus, quite a number of dishes have a vinegar based dipping sauce like tapa (cured beef…in vinegar!), longganisa (Filipino sausage), pritong lumpia (fried spring rolls), inihaw (grilled meats including streetfood grilled items like isaw and the lot), balut (duck embryo), chicharon…I can go on and on! Do I hear ooohhhhh and ahhhs from you Filipinos out there? Can you add more vinegar heavy dishes on my list? Oh and did I mention we practically have different vinegars per province?!? I think that this quirk also goes back into pre-refrigeration times in the Philippines. We had to learn how to preserve food and vinegar was one of the ingredients that helped us to do so.
  • We are not ashamed to add a little bit of fat…Oh, okay we like A LOT OF FAT.
We like the fat because fat gives flavor. We do not remove the skin off the chickens. We hardly skim off the fat in the soups and stews. We fight over the crispy skin of the lechon (roasted pig). We even eat deep fried crispy pork fat…as a snack. Kapeesh?
  • We cook rice in a gazillion ways.
A meal is not a meal without steamed white rice. But aside from this obsession, we have a gazillion ways to cook rice. When I say rice cake, gosh. I do not even know where to begin! There are perhaps a hundreds of kinds of rice cake in the Philippines, of all colors, textures, shapes and sizes. We have rice cake in banana leaves. We have rice cake in bamboo stalks. We have rainbow colored rice cakes (a.k.a. sapin-sapin), I kid not. We have coconut meat covered rice cakes. We have rice cakes with cheese. We have rice cakes with salted eggs. We have rice cakes wrapped in coconut leaves. Ugh. The Philippines has 7,1007 islands (7,1008 islands during low tide!) and each province has one way of cooking it. So can you guess just how many rice cake variations there are? Ha! And that’s just rice cake, what if I include rice porridge? *Faint*
  • We do eat odds and ends because it is cheap.
A lot of our dishes involve the use of odd meat cuts like the awful offal (liver, heart, lungs, ears, tails, tongue, intestines, stomach, bile, blood, the list goes on), insects (Yes, insects! But I haven’t the courage to eat one just yet…) and seemingly inedible animals like frogs, rats and the like. Historically, all the good parts of the meat get to be on the tables of the Spanish colonizers or the more privileged upper class. Hence, all the “bad stuff” gets thrown away. So what’s a hungry poor man to do? Of course, make do of what’s left behind. Filipinos were resourceful enough to make do with the awful offal and the lot to fulfill a basic need: survival. So eventually, the use of the odds and ends in historical cooking have made their way into our regular dining fare. Makes sense doesn’t it?
Whew! That was indeed a mouthful of realizations. Hope you did learn as much about Filipino cuisine as I did.

TOP TEN FILIPINO BOXERS OF ALL TIME

10. Bernard Docusen: He never won a title but was considered one of the best fighters in the late 40’s and early 50’s. It was more difficult to win a title back then as there were only 8 weight classes and the opportunities to fight for the title was harder to come by. He first gained notoriety when he gave Sugar Ray Robinson one of his toughest fights on June 28, 1948. Docusen was only 21 years old at the time and lost a close decision to the greatest boxer of all time. Unfortunately, he never gained another crack at a title again. He was inducted in the New Orleans Sports Hall Of Fame in 1976 and in the California Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2008.

9. Gerry Penalosa: Probably the best technical fighter the Philippines has ever produced. A two time divisional champion, he was a former WBC super flyweight champion and WBO bantamweight champion. His owns an impressive record of 57 wins versus only 7 losses. Most of his losses have also came from controversial decisions and was only soundly defeated in his fight against Juan Manuel Lopez. At age 37, he is still going strong and is set to fight Eric Morel in the ‘Pinoy Power III’ this coming February 3rd.

8. Small Montana: His real name was Benjamin Gan. He owned a record of 83 wins and 24 loses. He became the World Flyweight Champion, when he defeated Midget Wolgast in 1935. A fighter with less than adequate power, he used his speed and ring intelligence to defeat most of his opponents.

7. Little Dado: One of the top fighters in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions in the late 30’s and early 40’s. He won the California version of the World Flyweight title in 1938 by defeating fellow Filipino Small Montana.

6. Luisito Espinosa: Known as the Golden Boy of Filipino boxing or Lindol, which means earthquake. He was probably the most globally known and accomplished Filipino boxer in the 1990’s. One of the most complete and talented fighter the Philippines has ever produced; he was a former bantamweight and featherweight champion. The only knock on him was he tended to perform at the level of his opponents, which might have been the biggest factor in him not being able to maximize his potential.

5. Ben Villaflor: A southpaw with bricks in his hands; he was definitely was one of the best fighters in the lower divisions during the seventies. He was a two time junior lightweight champion and owned a career record of 54 wins and 8 loses. He might have been able to achieve more but retired prematurely at the age of 23 years old after losing the rematch with Samuel Serrano.

4. Ceferino Garcia: The only Filipino boxer to ever hold a title at middleweight. He is often coined as the inventor of the bolo punch. He owned a career record of 102 wins and 21 losses. His number of victories is said to be the most wins ever by a Filipino boxer. One of the toughest fighters in his era, he won a middleweight title when he defeated Fred Apostoli in Madison Square Garden in 1939. His victory came as a surprise to many as Ceferino twice failed to win a belt in the welterweight division against Barney Ross and Henry Armstrong. He is now remembered for his bout with Henry Armstrong in the middleweight division, which ended up in a draw.

3. Pancho Villa: His real name was Francisco Guilledo and was the Philippines’ first world champion. He fought a total of 109 fights, which included 92 win, 8 loses and 4 draws. What’s makes his record more impressive is that he only fought until the age of 23 since he died prematurely from a tooth infection. But despite his short career, he remains one of the most accomplished Filipino boxers of all time. In 1922 he became the American flyweight champion by upsetting Johnny Buff.

Unfortunately he lost the title to Frankie Genaro via a controversial decision the following year. But Pancho Villa obtained another title, when he fought Jimmy Wilde for the then vacant world flyweight championship in 1923. He never relinquished the title and defended it successfully four times. He only defended it four times since he also fought at the bantamweight division.  Pancho was definitely one of the best boxers in his era and until now is considered by many as the best flyweight in history along with Jimmy Wilde. He was inducted International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 1994.

2. Flash Elorde: The original ‘Filipino Flash’, he was widely regarded as the best Filipino boxer in history before Manny Pacquiao took the boxing world by storm. Flash Elorde won the world super featherweight title on March 6, 1960 by defeating Harold Gomes and successfully defended the title ten times. He is considered by WBC as its greatest super featherweight champion and his resume includes an impressive win versus Sandy Saddler. He lost the rematch with Saddler, but the latter was widely criticized for using “dirty tactics” throughout the bout.

1. Manny Pacquiao: The only boxer in history to hold a title in seven different weight classes. His impressive resume includes victories over potential hall of famers such as Marco Antonio Barrera, Miguel Cotto, Erik Morales and Ricky Hatton. Once a raw southpaw slugger with limited defensive skills; he has now transformed himself into a more complete fighter with great footwork and power in both hands. Now, he is not only considered by many as the best Filipino boxer in history, but also one of the greatest boxers of all time.

THE TOP TEN FILIPINO BOXERS OF ALL-TIME

PhilBoxing.com

Gabriel 'Flash' Elorde

The lovely Pia Guanio, best known for her Chica Minute portion on the evening news of GMA 7 – 24 Oras – recently hosted a program titled “Ang Pinaka Astig Na Pinoy Boxers” on QTV 11 in which she named the top ten Filipino boxers of all-time.

The choices were not hers but rather the result of what seemed like a fairly reliable weighted survey based on the choice of a panel of media personnel who cover boxing on television or write extensively about the fight game. It also included sometime promoter and boxing manager Lope “Jun” Sarreal.

We informed the producer who interviewed us about our choices that quite frankly it was a little unfair to the other boxers in contention for the top honors to include Sarreal since he was the brother-in-law of the late, great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde and would naturally lean towards picking Elorde as No.1.

However, in fairness to Sarreal, his reasons for selecting Elorde as the greatest Filipino fighter of all-time were honest and well-founded and in many ways matched our own thoughts as to why we considered Elorde the greatest, with absolutely no malice towards the other all-time greats.

Interestingly, not long after the QTV 11 program which was aired on prime time on Sunday, June 3 at 6:00 p.m. The Boxing Times ran a feature story on the Greatest Filipino Boxers of All-Time penned by boxing writer John Gregg. The difference between the two was that Gregg’s choices were his own while the QTV 11 list of the top ten was a weighted consensus among prominent individuals from Philippine media who are regarded as responsible individuals with sound judgment who cover the sport.

Among those who were interviewed aside from Sarreal were longtime radio-tv commentator, host and for some time now a sports columnist of the Manila Bulletin, Ed Picson. One of the most widely-read columnists and often Picson’s partner in the coverage of the PBA games for years, Quinito Henson was also on the show along with Ed Tolentino who is a prolific writer in a variety of sports and in many respects a storehouse of facts and figures.

Youthful PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad who covers boxing both local and international as well as other sports, primarily basketball, also provided his own insights on the top ten as we too had the privilege of doing.

There was also another significant difference between the QTV 11 top ten and The Boxing Times roster since the TV show included amateur boxers who by their achievements were considered worthy of recognition.

John Gregg and the TV show had six fighters common to both – Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao, the late world junior lightweight champion Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Francisco Gulliedo who used the ring name of the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, two division world champion Luisito Espinosa, world super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa and world flyweight champion Erbito Salavarria.

Pancho Villa.

Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao.

Luisito Espinosa.

Ceferino Garcia.

Also included in the TV choices were two-division world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa, world junior lightweight champion Rolando Navarette and the two Olympic silver medalists Anthony Villanueva and Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco.

Missing from the top ten chosen by the Filipino boxing media but included in Gregg’s list were middleweight champion Ceferino Garcia, Eluterio “Little Dado” Zapanta who was WBA flyweight and WBA bantamweight champion, WBA super featherweight champion Ben Villaflor and WBA super featherweight champion Jesus “The Hawaiian Punch” Salud.

Of course the telling difference was in the top choice with the Filipinos choosing Elorde and Gregg naming Pacquiao. Gregg’s assessment was obviously based solely on Pacquiao’s remarkable achievements in the ring. The choice on Pia Guanio’s program was a combination of achievements in the ring, overall character, demeanor both in and outside the ring and the human dimensions that set Elorde apart in most respects from all the rest.

When the results were tallied Elorde received 65 votes -- just two votes ahead of Pancho Villa with 63. Villanueva who many felt was robbed of a gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when he lost to Russian Stanislav Stepashkin in a bitterly controversial decision . The late incomparable boxing commentator Joe Cantada screamed “We were robbed! We were robbed!” while doing the ringside commentary for radio station dzHP “The Sound of the City” while Villanueva’s father and Los Angeles Olympics bronze medalist Cely Villanueva who was in the Manila studio with us embraced us and broke down and cried.

Villanueva who received 56 votes was followed by Luisito “Lindol” Espinosa who got 38 votes for fourth spot and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games silver medalist Onyok Velasco who received 43 votes.

Pacquiao, to the surprise of many landed only sixth with a total of 39 votes. Pacquiao’s setback in his bid to unseat incumbent congresswoman Darlene Antonino Custodio in the last May 14 elections despite the overwhelming sentiments of his fans and sincere supporters against his entering politics definitely told along with his decision to sign two contracts, the first with Golden Boy and a second with Top Rank two months later plus his late nights and long hours driven by a penchant for gambling in casinos, at cockfights and at the pool table.

Dodie Boy Penalosa who heroically overcame the handicap of polio to become a two-division world champion was No. 7 with 34 votes followed by Salavarria with 33. The ninth spot was occupied by the “Bad Boy from Dadiangas” Rolando Navarette with 25 votes while Dodie Boy’s brother Gerry Penalosa rounded off the top ten with 19 votes.

Laura Elorde, widow of the late world junior lightweight champion who reigned for almost seven-and-a-half years and was the longest reigning world champion at that time was touched by the choice of her late husband as the Philippines No.1 in a list of all-time greats.

Ms. Elorde said “we appreciate the opinion of many on this and it has helped my children live up to the legacy that their father has left them.” In what to us was a classic statement Laura Elorde remarked “when you treat people right and you have the heart for everybody, they will respect you, love you and remember you.”

The comments of the panel in relation to the choice of Elorde mirrored what the public sentiment towards him has always been .

Henson said Elorde was “not just a skilful boxer. He was also very clever, very intelligent.” Ed Tolentino classified Elorde as a “scientific boxer who analyzed the weaknesses and tendencies of his opponent and exploited them. He had very good reflexes.”

Chino Trinidad noted that Elorde felt for his people. To Sarreal, Elorde was “a tiger in the ring but when he was outside he was extremely good and super humble and helped many charitable projects.” Picson mentioned that when people talked about Elorde and his life they simply felt good.

We recalled the fact that at that time, in the 1960s, “ there were no television cameras to capture Elorde distributing food or helping poor people. He did it all very quietly.” Tolentino took off from there remembering that Elorde built orphanages, churches and would “willingly donate his hard-earned money which he got through his blood and sweat.”

According to Tolentino, Flash Elorde was “ a guy with an unparalleled killer instinct inside the ring but with a very human heart outside the ring.”

During his fights the sisters at Saint Rita along Sucat would pray the rosary while gathered around a radio listening to the coverage over dzHP which covered most of the Filipino legend’s fights including his historic battles with Japan’s Teruo Kosaka, Ismael Laguna, Love Allotey, Suh Kang Il, his two world lightweight title fights with champion Carlos Ortiz and many more.

Elorde who won the title in a spectacular seventh round knockout of American Harold Gomes before some 30,000 wildly cheering fans at the inauguration of the Araneta Coliseum on March 16, 1960 eventually lost the crown to the young Japanese Yoshiaki Numata over seven years later in Tokyo.

The son of a poor farmer from Bogo, Cebu, Elorde battled his way to the world title and into the hearts and homes of millions of Filipinos. He was, for the most part of his illustrious career managed by the Grand Old Man of Philippine boxing Lope “Papa” Sarreal who later became Elorde’s father-in-law when Elorde married Sarreal’s daughter, Laura.

Elorde always fought the best in his division and had several memorable ring battles. It was indeed a tribute to him that the men he fought such as Gomes, Shigeki Kaneko and Ortiz have been special guests at the Annual Elorde Awards Banquet of Champions which is held to commemorate his birthday on March 25. Without exception the men he fought and beat or lost to, praise Elorde for his skill and sportsmanship in the ring and his extraordinary human qualities beyond boxing.

Enshrined in the Boxing Hall of Fame just like Pancho Villa who was the first Filipino and Asian world champion when he scored a sensational seventh round KO over Jimmy Wilde before a huge crowd at the Polo Grounds in New York on May 18, 1923, Elorde is similarly enshrined in the hearts and minds of a generation of Filipinos who lived life with goodness and simplicity at a time when boxing was more a sport than a naked business enterprise where promoters milk the public dry and where integrity and decency are virtues long forgotten. There are exceptions for sure but sadly too few to make much of a difference.

In today’s utterly commercialized world of boxing Manny Pacquiao is a national idol if not a hero, and rightly so. But his place in boxing history, indeed in the consciousness of millions of Filipinos is built solely on his exploits in the ring, nowhere else. Pacquiao’s indomitable courage and gallantry are the stuff that legends are made of. He is, today, the most recognizable Filipino both at home and abroad although some of his actuations in the past year have somewhat eroded his stature and diminished the sparkle associated with a national treasure.

During the Elorde era television was comparatively new and international communications and media were in a state far removed from the kind of worldwide phenomenon it is today. It also exerted nowhere near the level of influence that media exerts on audiences in this day and age.

There were no publicity agents or PR spin doctors who made fighters look bigger than they really were or made people believe beyond belief. Gentlemen like Elorde lived and died and won esteem and recognition, if not adulation, purely on their merits and their achievements. They were recognized by fans and media, up close and in a very personal way.

In many ways Elorde showed fighters who came after him how to break free from the bondage of poverty and to battle their way into national recognition and respect. As he traveled along his glory Elorde never ever forgot to look back and remember where he came from.

As the Filipino reflected on the abiding sense of respect for Elorde he was pictured as a good and decent man, a loving father, a caring husband and a deeply Christian individual who essentially cared for others more than even himself.

Truth to tell we can discuss and even debate the question of who was the greatest Filipino boxer of all time and indeed who was the finest boxer ever, pound-for-pound. But the assessments will be subjective because the fighters are intrinsically separated by time and circumstance.

We maintain that as a fighter per se Pacquiao is ahead by a proverbial knockout. But if our assessment is based in the context of Elorde’s skills as a “thinking fighter” as George Araneta who was a young man who watched Elorde destroy Gomes in 1960 and you mesh that with his qualities as an incredibly decent human being then “The Flash” stands tall in the pantheon of Filipino greats including Pancho Villa, Ceferino Garcia and a host of other ring gladiators in a glorious era.

The greatness of Elorde was not measured merely by his achievements in the ring as a fighter and the fairness with which he engaged his opponents but by the respect he earned because of the respect he gave.

To us – and to many others – Elorde made his greatest contribution to boxing and the Filipino race, outside the ring. He was soft-spoken, humble and a personification of decency and kindness. He was a man who cared deeply for his people and was proud of his country no matter what.

He bowed and never bragged. He was humble and never haughty. He gave and never asked anything in return. He was big but to him the sport was bigger.

Our friendship with Elorde stood the test of time because it was steeped in mutual respect, honesty and affection. We are glad that the QTV 11 panel eventually chose Flash Elorde as the greatest Filipino fighter of all-time. To us, no matter what anybody says, Flash Elorde was and always will be No.1.

1) JOE LOUIS

Record:

Won 66 Lost 3, 52 KO (66-3)

Boxing Era: 1954-1951
Known as “The Brown Bomber”, Joe Louis was an American Icon. He was clearly a shining star head and shoulders above the rest in his time. He couldn’t lose. Joe Louis only had 1 legitimate loss against Germany’s Max Schmeling which he later avenged in a sensational and historical 1st round KO. Joe Louis single handedly dismantled the Nazi image of invincibility and sent a direct and powerful check mate to Hitler. He gave his country a more than sensational day to remember.
Joe Louis became an American hero and symbol of national pride, and African-American pride. During this time of world war and racial inequality in America, Joe Louis was larger than boxing. Many of Joe Louis’ fights had unparalleled international, political, and social significance. All across the nation, droves of people were glued to their radios, and would explode into the streets upon many of his victories.
Because of the times, that type of fervor for boxing or for one athlete will most likely never be seen again. He was the first African-American boxer to be an American hero for whites, blacks and all Americans.
The rest of his only 3 losses came after his fall from grace. Once a proud symbol of patriotism, he was railroaded with taxes and severely in debt. This happened to him even despite donating his celebrity, money, morale, free exhibition matches and enlistment to the United States military in earlier years. Consequently, he was forced to keep fighting passed his retirement. With difficulty he still managed to win because of who he was, but suffered a pair of losses, including an embarrassing 8th round knock out right through the ropes by a fresh, up and coming Rocky Marciano. Regardless, the nation will never stop and give another boxer as much acclamation as Joe Lewis in 1938.

2) MUHAMMAD ALI

Record: 56 wins 37 KO 5 losses (56-5)

Boxing Era: 1960-1981
In every aspect of the sport, Muhammad Ali was electrifying. Ali was an exciting, outspoken, undefeated boxing phenomenon in is prime, and was by far boxing's best entertainer. Ali would often taunt his opponents, fake punches, and do his famous shuffles in the ring. He was also just as good a boxing promoter as he was a boxer; his loud mouth trash talk, and rhyming antics were truly larger than life and unprecedented in the sport.
Eventually Ali was stripped of the heavyweight title, banned from boxing, and faced imprisonment during his prime for refusing to fight in Vietnam because of his religious beliefs.
This was Ali’s most controversial moment. Ali’s rise to dominance in the boxing world came after the careers of African-American Champions Jack Johnson, and Joe Louis, and many African-Americans still held resentment for the Nation's treatment of them. Jack Johnson was always kept down and discredited. Joe Louis was a hero but still was betrayed and derailed with taxes. Muhammad Ali was a strong, confident, and new kind of African-American heavyweight champ encased in many of the controversies of the 60’s. The country tried to shame him as an unpatriotic draft evader for not fighting in Vietnam, but Ali had a very serious argument that reverberated all over the world. He voiced his disapproval of the reasons, or lack there of, why we were at war in the first place. Primarily he made note of his own people being denied rights, jailed and discriminated against. He noted with disgust that his people, even African-American women were being unfairly treated and oppressed, hunted by police, attacked by dogs and hosed down like animals in the street. He asked why he should be forced to fight for a country that hasn’t even given his people their rights and equality at home yet, all to help murder and oppress other people of color 10,000 miles away. One of his famous one liners was “No Vietcong ever called me N****r.”
Ali returned despite that huge 3 year set back, rebounded and still found a way to emerge on top again beating the best of the best.
Ali brought us the most famous fights in boxing and in one of the sports most action packed and competitive eras. He got the best of the exchanges with Joe Frasier, George Foreman, Ken Norton, and Leon Spinks----and he still found a way to do it when he was no longer invincible, after his prime. Most of his post-prime fights are all legendary and we know some of them by their nicknames like “The Thrilla in Manilla”, “The Rumble in the Jungle”.
Ali was already a living legend but catapulted in to all time boxing supremacy after dismantling a young, undefeated, and then unstoppable Big George Foreman. Ali was getting older and people finally thought of him as the underdog who's time was up. Foreman obliterated Frasier and became champion, and many thought Ali's humbling beating was next. However, the event was something magical. It was clear Ali was something much more than a boxer who permanently changed and inspired the entire world. Ali had the entire African town chanting in the streets "Ali, Kumbaye!", then somehow Ali knocked out Foreman with an unprecedented strategy and became Heavyweight Champion for an unheard of 3rd time. The seemingly unbeatable Foreman now had 1 loss, Muhammad Ali. No longer seen as arrogant, he was special, and he delivers. At this point, referring to him as "The Greatest" began to seem undisputed and justified.
Ali is credited for being the Heavyweight Champion of the world at the most competitive and difficult times to be Heavyweight Champ. He incredibly avenged every loss he ever had, usually coming up best of 3, except his very last 2 fights when Father Time would have his way, both losses to Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick. People started to notice his demeanor was changing. In his very last fight, the old lion could not be knocked out, he still went the distance but sadly didn’t have the ability to win anymore and retired at 39.
Muhammad Ali is still one of the most famous, and legendary men in the world. Whenever the greatest of all time are discussed, his name will be at the very top of the list for a very long time to come.

3) SUGAR RAY ROBINSON

Record: 173 wins, 109 (KO)19 losses, 6 draws, 2 no contests

Boxing Era: 1940-1965
Many consider Robinson to be the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time. Just boxing prowess considered, he might be. Robinson may be the best combination of boxing talent wrapped up in one man that the world has ever seen. He was a freakish enigma who somehow possessed awesome KO power in his punch, lightning fast speed, outstanding footwork and dexterity, and a solid chin. However, I list him 3rd when all variables in making a boxer “great” are considered. Ali and Louis had more international, political and social significance tied into them and their fights, and it immortalized them. Ali and Louis had more fights in which the entire world was a buzz and tuned in. Aside from that, Robinson is high above the rest.
In addition to his superior boxing ability, Robinson was also memorable for his good looks and flamboyance. He walked with large entourages, credited as the first athlete to have an entourage, he owned a famous night spot in Harlem, and he was known to be an excellent singer and dancer. In and outside the ring his presence was large.
Despite being a dance star in France and all the flash, Robinson was clearly the best warrior in the ring. Muhammad Ali and many of the best boxers around all concurred that he was tops.
Robinson won the middleweight championship a remarkable and unprecedented 5 times. Stylistically he had it all. He had amazing speed and finesse. Robinson also dished out sound beatings, and he could take beatings and rally back in most impressive fashion. He was never out, it was always a matter of how this boxing genius would figure his way out and turn the fight around, and he usually did.
There are many boxers who are always criticized for not being challenged enough by real competition to prove their worth---Robinson isn't one of them. Robinson has proven he was the best of the best with an exclamation point. Robinson defeated a host of Hall of Fame boxers like Jake LaMotta, Kid Gavilan, and Rocky Graziano. Even 16lbs lighter, Robinson beat the legendary “Raging Bull” Jake LaMotta 5 out of 6 fights. Having a check list of over 8 Hall of Fame boxers he eclipsed cements the fact that Robinson should always make the top 3 on any list.

4) JACK JOHNSON

Record: Won 73 (40 KO), Lost 13, Draw 9, NC, 2

Boxing Era: 1897-1945
Before Muhammad Ali or Roy Jones Jr., the biggest brash, bold trash talker around was the first African American Heavyweight Champ Jack Johnson. Being the first African American Heavyweight champ alone should secure him a spot on any top ten listing. For over a decade, nobody could beat him. He humiliated his opponents, holding them up and kept them from being knocked out so he could keep beating on them. Johnson made a mockery of most of his opponents and angered white America with his defiant “in your face” antics. The press abused and discredited him, but Johnson still couldn’t be beaten. For over a decade Johnson was the most famous and hated African American on the planet.
Jack Johnson is one of the most brilliant boxers of all time, employing an unusual style that made it extremely hard for his opponents to land a punch on him. Large but light on his feet, Johnson was extremely elusive, then battered away on his frustrated challengers.
During Johnson’s insurmountable reign, there was such an outcry for a great white hope that undefeated former champ James J. Jeffries stepped forth to dethrone him. Jeffries came back from retirement to prove “that a white man was better than a negro". Jeffries trained back into great shape pummeling his sparring partners. The fight was one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history billed as “The Fight of the Century”. Referring to Jeffries, this is where the famous moniker "Great White Hope" originated.
As the fight took place, it was obvious that Johnson was too much for Jeffries and overwhelmed him. Jeffries’ corner threw in the towel before the inevitable knock out could occur. The critics were silenced from this point on.
Johnson’s victory sparked numerous celebrations as well as race riots all over the country. Johnson eventually became a sole victim of jealousy and hatred. He was made an example of many times, received death threats, and was incarcerated because his wife was a white woman, for which he made travel plans with. A law meant to curb transporting women for the purpose of sexual immorality and fornication, which either way should never be a governments concern in a free country, was used to stick against Johnson.
Jack Johnson was broken down and eventually time caught up with him. He only won 2 of his last 9 fights because he attempted to keep fighting after his exile and imprisonment well into his 40’s.
Perhaps in a different time, Johnson's rise to greatness would be less stressful or obstructed by interruptions unrelated to the sport enabling him to reach his full potential. Regardless, when Jack Johnson was on top, he was in a different stratosphere and he made his point very loud and clear. Ring Magazine founder Nat Fliescher, considered Jack Johnson the greatest Heavyweight Champ of all time.

5) MIKE TYSON

Record: 50 wins, 6 losses, 44 KO, 2NC (50-6)

Boxing Era: 1985-2005
Let’s just be real; Tyson is snubbed, misplaced, or left out all together on almost all the lists I’ve seen. We’ve forgotten what he was and moved on. It’s outrageous, and unfair. There is absolutely no other boxer in boxing history that has amassed such a legendary fear factor and buzz in the sport than "Iron" Mike Tyson.
In the 80’s and early 90’s, Tyson was looked at as an unbeatable juggernaught who knocked out every contender of every size and caliber within the first few seconds or rounds of almost every fight. It became an entertaining query just how long the next unlucky sap would last.
Iron Mike Tyson, the once "Baddest Man on the Planet" was the youngest heavyweight champ ever. He snatched the title by way of humbling 2nd round (smacked down to the canvass…attempt to get up…10 second dazed chicken dance, than back down again…) knock out at 20 years old---a kid. He also was the first ever and youngest to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles AT THE SAME TIME. Say what you will, Mike Tyson is the only boxer that probably could’ve annihilated every other boxer on this list or any other list on a good day in his prime. You know it’s true. From 20-26 years old, no one could beat a focused, mentally healthy, and hungry Mike Tyson.
Tyson was absorbed into the forefront of Pop culture. From the very popular Nintendo Game "Mike Tyson's Punch Out", to his cartoons and comic books in Asia, to Will Smith's "I Think I Could Beat Mike Tyson", the world gravitated to Tyson like an other worldly super hero. Either by knocking people out within seconds or in a very controversial loss later in his career, the fact remains that Mike Tyson was a sensational spark to the boxing world and deserves to be on this list. Years after his meteoric rise and fall, he remains one of the most talked about boxers of all time.
After the death of trainer and father figure Cus D’amoto, a 3 year imprisonment (that should never have happened---it was an obvious set up), a highly publicized fiasco of a failed marriage, fall outs with Don King who owed him lots of money, mismanagement, and an eventual loss of heart for the sport, his star and prominence eventually faded into a series of controversial or lackluster losses and performances. The era of Mike Tyson is still unprecedented and he remains a point of reference for every young sensation on the rise.

6) JACK DEMPSEY

Won 66 (KO 51), Lost 6 (KO 1) , drawn 9

Boxing Era: 1914-1927
Jack Dempsey is definitely one of the most popular American boxers in history. He is known for setting the highest attendance and purse records and had the very first million dollar fight ever. Jack Dempsey was worth it, he was known for being the most savagely brutal and entertaining boxers of all time. Missing teeth, broken jaws and swollen eyes were all things one would expect from a Dempsey fight. Dempsey was described as a “superhuman wild man.”
Jack Dempsey is one of those old school genuine tough guys who used to fight in saloons for money. He reigned as heavyweight champion for 7 years, 7 years in which he severely punished his opposition trying to dethrone him.
Eventually Dempsey lost his title to Gene Tunney which was the highest grossing fight in boxing history for a long time. He lost a close rematch a year later as well.
Dempsey retired and eventually opened a successful restaurant named after himself in NYC. He also has a NYC street named after him in his honor and appeared on a US stamp. The boxing world has never forgot Dempsey for his ferocity in the ring and his dominance of the Heavyweight division in his time.

7) JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ

Record: Won 107 Lost 6, 2 draws, 80 KO

Boxing Era: 1980-2005
His record speaks for itself. Chavez is a Mexican legend who has gone over ten years straight without a loss. He was known as a tough as nails fighter who would always bring a great fight to the table. Chavez has earned himself the uncontested distinction of being recognized as "Mexico's Greatest Fighter".
Chavez is a 6 time champion in 3 different divisions. He also amassed a career record of 88-0 before his first loss to Frankie Randall that he later avenged twice, the 2nd time being the most convincing. Before that he had a draw with Pernell Whitaker that many felt he lost.
Chavez could take punishment all night long. Regardless, he would give punishment all night long. In order to beat Chavez a challenger would expect to go the distance, and expect to feel pain.
Chavez has beaten Roger Mayweather, Hector Camacho, Sammy Fuentes and many other great fighters through the years. Even before his retirement he was already seen as a Mexican legend who garnered respect and admiration. Chavez was always a huge boxing draw that packed stadiums and was internationally famous star in the sport.
Chavez's name is still currently resounding in the sport through his son and name sake, Julio Chavez, Jr.

8) ROCKY MARCIANO

Won 49 Lost 0, 43 KO (UNDEFEATED)

Boxing Era:1948-1955
Rocky Marciano is one of the hardest punchers ever who’s biggest claim to fame is being the only undefeated Heavyweight champion. Marciano wasn’t that smooth as far as finesse is concerned, but he made up for it by punishing his opponents with power.
There’s been a back and forth Marciano debate for decades. Some people call him the greatest. However, Marciano is never ranked high amongst the greatest by boxing analyst despite being undefeated. You’ll need to look no where else to understand why. His less than stellar rankings are primarily because the competition he faced wasn’t as strong as many of the other champions like Ali or Robinson. Ali and Robinson beat many other all time great Hall of Famers you might find on similar lists, and while these fighters were in their prime. Simply being undefeated can be easily nullified. Many of the boxing greats were also once undefeated boxers for long periods of time. Willie Pep was once 61-0. Sugar Ray Robinson was 85-0 as an amateur and once 40-0 as a pro. It’s only when these warriors fought other legends, took losses, and reasserted their dominance did people learn how good they were and earned their places in boxing history. Most of the biggest names Marciano fought were passed their prime and weren’t great litmus tests. Marciano took the Heavyweight title from a 38 year old Jersey Joe Walcott. He also famously knocked Joe Louis out of the ring, but Louis was obviously not the same Louis, old, weathered and forced to keep fighting because of debt. Robinson had Jake LaMotta and beat him. Ali had Frasier and Foreman and beat them. Unfortunately and to no fault of his own, Marciano won all his fights and never had a fresh legendary nemesis to prove his worth with an exclamation point.
Regardless, Marciano will always be remembered for his ferocity and no losses. He was a class act who never took more credit than he deserved. Being the only undefeated Heavyweight champion of all time will keep him relevant in boxing debates and rankings for a very long time.

9) HENRY ARMSTRONG JR.

150 wins, (100 KO) 21 losses and 9 draws

Boxing Era: 1931-1945
Henry Armstrong was the first and only boxer to hold 3 world championship division titles at the same time. He would’ve won a fourth, something that no one has come close to doing ever, but fell short due to a controversial draw against Ceferino Garcia. Many thought he should’ve won. Regardless, his greatest achievement is defending the welter weight title more times than anyone else in boxing history.
He started his professional career on the losing end, but then began several stunning, long winning streaks. Many times in his career, Armstrong answered a loss with over 10 consecutive victories. One of his hottest streaks was 27 wins in a row, all of those 27 wins by way of knock out. Henry Armstrong’s 27 knock out win streak is viewed by many as the best winning streak ever in boxing. No one does that anymore. Mayweather and Pacquiao are beasts in the game at the moment, but they could never boast of that kind of a streak while fighting the sports best.
Ring Magazine voted Armstrong 2nd in the greatest fighters of the last 80 years list in 2007. One may find variations on his record because alot of the older boxers fought so much and under different names that it's hard for boxing historians to tell. Regardless, Armstrong's win streak under his own name is something that isn't hard to credit and won't be duplicated anytime soon.
After retirement, Armstrong trained young boxers and also became a Baptists minister.

10) WILLIE PEP

Record: won 229 (KO 65), lost 11, drawn 1

Boxing Era: 1940-1966
Willie Pep is an Italian-American boxer who fought for 26 years with a total of 229 wins out of 241 fights, perhaps the most impressive record in boxing.
Pep was the World Featherweight Champion with an astounding record of 61-0 before finally losing to another World Champion and fellow future Hall of Famer, Sammy Angott by decision in 1943. Pep bounced back and won 5 fights for the rest of that year. He did it again for the entire year of 1944, winning all 16 fights he fought in.
Pep continued his career with a staggering amount of victories at a championship level cementing the fact that he’s one of the best of all time. He won 73 fights in row which set an amazing boxing record.
Willie Pep was an asset to the sport and his weight class. The middle and heavy weight classes made the most money and attendance. Pep changed that expectation eventually fighting before packed arenas.
Setting boxing records from the start of his career until the end, William Pep is definitely one of the greatest pugilists of the century.
